A 21st century ship in world war 2 is greater than even an entire fleet of ships. And wowing the people of that era was one of the main ideas of this story. And with this one ship Japan can win the war. But that is not what is good for Japan. The defeat of Japan was probably the best thing that could have happened to Japan, it got rid of the imperialists and the inequalities in that country and made it a democracy and made it the good country that it is today. Dealing with this problem was the biggest setback in this story. The name Zipang itself is the name of the new country that this story is eventually trying to create. But this story just ends not reaching anywhere. And even after 19yrs, a 2nd season has not come. If there was a 2nd season, I could recommend this show, but as of now, I can't.
Also, the ideas they used to show off the capabilities of the ship was a little too immature. Overall it felt like a lost opportunity.
Still its a 7/10 for being different.

compared to all the echi series out there, this is a must see show, but since the story is incomplete with this anime it only falls under recommended. Too bad, like many other shows this deserves a second season unlike all those high-school themed shitty shows.

Great WWII Anime, Fairly inaccurate (but,... then again the future was changed the moment they stepped into the past), horrible time travel plot device used (literally, come on a secret government experiment would have been much better then plain old lightning), but over all it was a good watch and a fun one at that. Something about this anime made me like it a lot and I don't know what it was!

If you're a fan of WWII and/or time travel this is a must. A fairly original story and very engaging plot. How can one ship have so much power?Watch and you'll find out.

I watched this series after reading a review from another web site. sorry.
I loved this series, I started with thinking it was just a war series but i got more involved with wanting to know the intentions of the characters.
The animation isnt the greatest but it makes up for it with the story and character developments.
Its basically about a warship of today's era going back in time 60 years to the midway battles in ww2. An interesting idea that is unrealistic but the characters treat it very seriously which gets you hooked.
The only let down was that the series was too short. The last few episodes left me saying 'then what happens?'. Besides that the whole series is great with the characters and story and the detail of the history and warships is fantastic.

As an alternate history buff, I was excited by the premise of this anime. As an American I had seen/read other what-ifs about modern military hardware appearing in the past to fight on the Allies' side, particularly the movie The Final Countdown in which the Nuke carrier Nimitz winds up at the Battle of Pearl Harbor.
Those two reasons, are why I was so excited to see the Japanese spin on the concept.
Animation 6
Characters are nothing special, but the ships and aircraft are excellent.
Sound 5-6
Again nothing special, but not terrible either. The seiyuus are competent and the OP and ED are okay I guess.
Story 10
I am on the edge of my seat waiting for each episode. The scripts keep in mind the two strikingly different cultures of the IJN and the MJSDF, even though one emerged phoenix-like from the other. I have not watched the full series yet (up to ep11), but I am still fascinated how this story will resolve.
Character 10
These characters have goals. They don't always say what they are, even to each other or even themselves, but they are bound and determined to do what THEY think is best for themselves and their world.; All the characters are defined, all have personalities even if they are only on screen for a moment.
