Anime: Kidou Senshi Gundam: The Origin 363354

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin is an ode to excellence, an art habitually outdoing itself. It is the epitome of what Gundam is and was, and is the type of work only a master can craft. Origin is cinematic brilliance, and one of the finest in modern manga adapting and modern anime storytelling. As such, it is as charming and emotionally evocative as the franchise has ever been, continually asserting itself among the best animated series this decade has to offer.

It would be unwise to herald such a title as absolute perfection; there are blemishes in this magnificent work of art. The questionable overreliance on 3D CGI can be off-putting when non-mechanical objects rendered in such a style look worse than Dozle in a car accident. Additionally, the film series stumbles choppily at first before truly hitting its monumental stride. Some of the ending themes are forgettable and the music takes a while to truly match the scale and magnificence of the series proper. Certain moments regarding character relationships can feel rushed as well. However, in the face of an 18-meter behemoth of ion and glory, these issues the size of a small dent. They exist yet mean little; mere bumps and scratches in the left calf of a machine painted, oiled, and buffed with the utmost care.

The character designs by legendary Gundam veteran and original mangaka Yoshikazu Yasuhiko are absolutely perfect, perfect updates on both the iconic designs of yore and the art redesigns of the manga. The expressions are the liveliest in the entire franchise, striking the perfect balance between character detail and freedom of animation of the models. As for the mechanical designs of the pre-0079 era, they work exquisitely as the prototypes and predecessors of what would become the norm of the One-Year War. The CGI work for these mechs, in particular, is nothing short of commendable, as the clunky experimental designs of the iconic mobile workers --prototypes to the iconic mobile suits-- are capitalized on tremendously. The directing of the action sequences --courtesy of franchise veterans Yoshikazu Yasuhiko and Takashi Imanishi-- is exquisite, most especially in regards to the iconic Custom Red Zaku II Char pilots. One need look no further than the spectacular opening scene in episode 1 or the battle in episode 6 to know exactly how kinetic and monumental these skirmishes are. The smoke effects work wonderfully as well, particularly in regards to the purple smoke and explosions of Federation ships and student artillery. Dare I say, if the CGI were present in the mechanical models exclusively, this would be Gundam’s visual magnum opus! It already achieves such marks from a directorial standpoint.

Even more care was taken to make sure that each development of the characters, narrative, and technology, kept the integrity of the original series intact. Char’s vengefulness was built up perfectly and shown to be as innate to him as humanly possible. Seeing him in a position of power is an absolute treat, whether it be him taking down a Guntank single-handedly as a child, or beating up a spy with his fists and a spiked plank. His malicious tendencies also originated from a place that feels both human and sensible, unlike a more direct counterpart in Anakin Skywalker aka Darth Vader and how the Star Wars prequels attempted to do the same. Additionally, witnessing other major characters from the original series in their younger forms was particularly charming. The biggest standouts were Dozle --the lovable oaf-- and Ramba Ral, both of whom were particular highlights in Origin. Even witnessing a younger Amuro Ray was wonderful, especially when everyone’s favorite troublesome little mascot, Haro began acting like the lovable goof fans know and love. The characters brand new to Origin held up as well and worked wonderfully in their roles, particularly Ramba’s father and the man who would take care of Char and Sayla in the second episode. Every second spent with these characters is wonderful and full of the type of bittersweet pleasantness you never get in anime, especially when you are familiar with where they end up in 0079.

The voice acting held up tremendously as well. Keith Silverstein did a marvelous job playing Char’s teenage and adult self, with just the type of calculated, semi-dominant, and slightly spiteful tinge that truly made up Char as a person up until the end of the original 0079. Kirk Thornton was splendid as a slightly younger but ultimately gravely Ramba Ral, and Doug Stone was splendid as his desperate, constantly stressed, and slightly deranged father. The most interesting casting choice was Mike Pollock -best known for his role as Eggman- whose performance as Char and Sayla’s caretaker, Don Teablo Mass. There are a plethora of other cast who did wonderfully in their roles as well, such as Liam O’Brien, and other well-known VAs such as Lisa Ortiz and Patrick Seitz make great background character voices. Even Hamon’s singing in the penultimate installment --in both languages-- especially in the context of the original’s story, is as beautiful as it is soul-crushing. Everything melts into a wonderful English dub, lip-syncing issues aside.

There’s a sense of love and ion Origin exudes, a marvelous sense of charisma that exemplifies the joys of cinema. It may not be as thematically rich as Thunderbolt, as visually mesmerizing as Char’s Counterattack, or as inviting as Turn A, but in many ways, this exemplifies the best of what Gundam has to offer. Even when displaying a sense of brutality synonymous with Gundam, this love letter to the franchise never stops bringing a sense of whimsy and evoke visceral emotion to the silver and digital screens. You may need to watch other installments to truly appreciate this one, but in doing so, this is your reward: the absolute pinnacle of Gundam!

While almost everybody is busy hyping whatever bullshit comes out every season, only to completely forget it in favor of the next bullshit that comes out, the actually good stuff under the radar. Gundam the Origin, one of the few great anime in this awful decade, is one of them. And you know what, I don’t mind how nobody cares about it. Part of being niche has to do with only the actual fans saying how great it is, not casuals who think whatever mainstream bullshit comes out is the only thing worth watching because it’s popular.

And I’m not implying Gundam is unknown to the public. It’s by far the most famous mecha franchise with countless seasons, toys, games, and manga. The thing is, almost nobody cares about the actually good stuff, which is the original universe, or better say the only good universe because it’s the first and the most retro of them all. The casuals are watching everything else, which to the most part is hollow spectacle about selling toys to children and has nothing to do with the original concept of a serious war drama.

And it’s not like the Universal Century is that serious as a whole. Origin has lots of comedic moments. Too many for some. The characters have a body language that is much more cartoony and hard to get into if you didn’t grow up with 80s cartoons. Well, lucky for me I did, so I don’t mind it much. In fact, I like how it follows the original style and doesn’t try to update it by making everybody being out of character for the sake of mass appeal. It’s not a reboot, but a prequel to the original 1979 series, it should feel like I can watch both of them and not be given the assumption they are not the same timeline. They are, and they feel the same, good job.

Also, good job with the CGI. It will eventually look bad after a few years, like all CGI do, but it was rendered far better than any tv series of its time, since it was given far more time than one week to do everything. That’s the beauty of OVAs. You get one once or twice every year and it looks spectacular, because the animation team is given enough time to do it right.

But eventually, the best part is how seriously it takes itself in of characterization and atmosphere when you compare it with everything else. The plot is elaborate, the characters are looked into, and the theme is explored wonderfully. It sounds like the same words can be used to describe any show you are a fanboy of, but let’s be honest here, very few anime are as remotely as detailed and looked into as Gundam the Origin. The staggering majority of mainstream anime are bullshit about high schools, oversexualized minors who yell all the time, and over-explanatory dialogues that waste hours in infodumping the rules of magical systems, only to break every single one of them for the sake of spectacle. No politics, no tactics, no intrigue, no backstabbing, no substance. So by this simple fact, Gundam the Origin is one of the very few anime that is not about obnoxious teenagers and half naked bimbos in some high school doing whatever random bullshit the plot wants them to do.

You are finally getting a worthwhile war drama that is not only faithful to the original title, but also manages to clarify everything you were hearing about in the series, without betraying its tone. It’s not easy to write a prequel that doesn’t feel stupid, or one that demystifies everything you were better off not knowing about. Gundam the Origin is one of the very few exceptions where everything clicks perfectly.

And finally, it has giant robots and spaceships fighting in space, with politics and ideals clashing all the time. If you are into that shit and you don’t mind CGI that much, since that is the downfall of any anime, you are going to have a blast with this one. It is not as great as Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and not that serious as Area 88, but it’s still one of my favorite anime ever.

Gundam es una franquicia de la cual soy muy ajeno, no terminé de ver la serie original, que pese a sus años y a muchos glitches en animación o a la hora de caracterizar a su cast, de lo que logré ver me parece un gran título y con un valor histórico muy significativo tanto en la industria del anime, al ser la primera deconstrucción de los mechas y una de las franquicias más proliferas, explotadas e influyentes de su medio, así como causar un impacto cultural bastante grande en Japón. Y bien se preguntarán, por qué estoy hablando entonces de esta entrega a pesar de no ser la original o porque no terminé la original antes de hablar de esta. La respuesta sería que esta entrega es una precuela, y a diferencia de otras precuelas, ésta en particular posee la suficiente independencia para mantenerse por sí misma, así que no veo la necesidad de ver la otra una vez que se anunció. Otro dato curioso es que esta serie viene de un manga que es un re imaginario de la franquicia original, posee sus diferencias con el material original, por lo tanto que realiza cosas que en la versión del 79 no existen, por lo que además lo hace un título un poco más interesante si se le ve superficialmente.

Fuera de la introducción y empezando a hablar de la serie como he dicho nunca terminé la versión original, así que me enfocaré en hablar solo de la siguiente parte y no haré comparaciones. La trama nos ubica en un futuro donde se ha producido un intento de independencia de una nación de un sistema federal que gobierna el espacio. La historia muestra el lento proceso de independización y su posterior conflicto armado con la nación que una vez fue su gobernante. En la historia hay muchas facciones que tienen intereses y agendas variadas, incluso dentro de una misma facción, lo que significa que retrata un conflicto bastante redondo, llegando a mostrar el nivel de maquiavelismo de un gobernante para obtener beneficios, ocasionando golpes de estados, conspiraciones y artimañas bien elaboradas. En este sentido, MSG:TO pone a muchas facciones en riesgo en las que si una llega a perder podría cobrarse la vida de miles de personas, desde militares hasta civiles, y la serie no se contiene a la hora de asesinar a sus personajes o de generar persecuciones políticas o sociales, genocidios o atentados contra figuras públicas importantes. Cada vez que ocurre esto se suele hacer muchos comentarios de corte anti belicista, mostrando como la guerra afecta a una civilización y a sus habitantes y gobernantes.

El show hace un bonito trabajo a la hora de mostrar la forma en cómo afecta la guerra a diversas personas. En los civiles por ejemplo se muestra las cosas que son capaces de hacer, como revueltas o actos barbáricos para defender sus creencias y las facciones que los representan o su indefensión frente a las amenazas del poderío militar de sus enemigos, y a la vez se ve como dichos soldados les puede afectar la guerra, llegándose a cuestionar sus acciones o si están haciendo lo correcto. Esto se toca también en los gobernantes, ya que vemos los enormes peligros que pueden enfrentarse por mantener su estatus, desde atentados, hasta proteger a sus familias de estos y de como un cambio de gobierno puede amenazar a ciertos individuos de algún espectro político adversario. En realidad la serie hizo un buen trabajo a la hora de retratar los peligros de la guerra a varios niveles de la sociedad.

Y ya que hablé acerca del efecto que tiene la guerra en diversos sectores sociales y políticos hablaré más sobre el cast de personajes. La serie está protagonizada por Char Aznable, un joven soldado que forma parte de una elite armada que manejan una serie de mechas de combate, como personaje no está nada mal, posee un carácter bastante metódico y centrado en sus planes que llega al nivel de cometer actos que pueden ser despreciables, pero que lo hace por una razón que es bastante entendible, ya que intenta meterse más dentro del circulo que gobierna su nación y entonces poder tener cerca sus objetivos, los cuales están muy justificados dado su pasado y su relación con dicha elite, además de no ser victimizado como otro tipo de personajes (coff coff Lelouch coff), a la hora de idear sus planes resulta ser muy inteligente y audaz, además de poseer mucho carisma, que lo hace un personaje bastante llamativo, como si fuese un mini Light Yagami pero menos astuto. Para algunos quizás dichas características lo hagan parecer un Gary stu, ya que muchas cosas le salen bien y no le pasa nada malo, lo cual es una tontería, ya que los méritos para conseguir todo ese prestigio fueron debido a su astucia y manipulación. La deuteragonista sería su hermana, Sayla Mass, la cual a mi parecer es el personaje más desarrollado del elenco, el personaje sirve para reflejar como la guerra afecta mentalmente a la gente, sufriendo graves tragedias una tras otra, como ver a muchos de sus seres queridos morir o que tenga que vivir escondida del ojo público debido a su antiguo estatus que poseía cuando era una niña. Es a partir de dichas tragedias lo que la hacen cambiar de actitud, siendo tranquila y temerosa a otra decidida y firme, sin mencionar que se le revelan muchos hechos que la hacen dudar de diversas cosas como el paradero de su hermano. Otro personaje que vale la pena mencionar es Amuro Ray, el protagonista de la serie original de Gundam, en esta entrega el personaje no tiene la misma relevancia que en su entrega principal, pero no por ello aquí no tenga sus méritos, como personaje está bien, su arco se basa en intentar averiguar sobre la creación del primer Gundam, lo que lo hace dudar mucho sobre los planes de su padre y el gobierno, esto a la vez lo hacen mas aislado y amargado, por lo que se vuelve más agresivo con sus supuestos amigos y distante con su mejor amiga, nada tan especial pero tiene lo suficiente para resaltar. El resto de los personajes no son mucho de resaltar, poseen personalidades muy simples que te las puedo resumir en gobernantes manipuladores, soldados con gran sentido del honor y la lealtad y soldados brutos sedientos de poder o reconocimiento, pero en general son personajes bien manejado pese a su poca profundidad. Lo que los hace resaltar es que todos poseen conexión con el conflicto, por lo que nadie es un relleno innecesario, bueno hay por ahí uno que otro personaje que no aporta mucho y supongo que sirven solo como fanservice de la serie original, como esa chica que puede ver el futuro, convenientemente, pero más allá de eso no tengo un verdadero problema. La simplicidad los hace fáciles de manejar, por lo que conocemos sus metas, objetivos, agendas y planes sin desperdiciar mucho tiempo e tonterías, el cast está más centrado y explorado que en muchas otras obras de carácter bélico, no llega al nivel de complejidad de LOGH, Platoon o FMAB, pero logran más que la mayoría, como esas propagandas pro guerra que demonizan un bando y no muestra el panorama completo del asunto.



Otro gran plus de la serie es el cómo maneja la importancia de la evolución militar dentro de una guerra, antes de que introdujesen los mechas uno de los bandos tenía muchas posibilidades de perder la guerra frente a otras facciones, pero una vez que aparecen dichas nuevas armas la balanza da un giro de casi 180° que pone de manifiesto todo un complot entre ambas facciones sobre quienes van a avanzar más en el desarrollo armamentístico, algo muy importante en periodos de guerra que pueden facilitar a un bando o a otro dependiendo de dicho desarrollo, y de cómo se pueden sabotear en supuestos periodos de paz que no son más que un periodo guerra fría. Y hablando de guerra fría ese es otro elemento interesante de este dibujito, puesto que se molestó en tratar el tema de buscar aliados durante el preludio de una guerra y como estos pueden llegar a ser muy útiles en combate.

En otras cosas como la construcción de mundo resulta ser desarrollada, como los distintos lugares donde vive la gente, algunos viviendo dentro de grandes edificaciones en el espacio, con ecosistemas generados artificialmente los cuales están basados en estructuras que so teorizadas como útiles para el sustento de la población, o el avance tecnológico en la construcción de vehículos como naves espaciales, tanques, mechas y demás. Me gustan también los detalles que se dan a la hora de manifestar las diferencias políticas o culturales entre los sistemas de cada bando, son superficiales dichas diferencias, pero está chévere el detalle.

Los valores de producción son grandiosos, por lo general no me gusta el CGI en animes porque poseen unas texturas no muy trabajadas y un movimiento cutre y tosco, para mi sorpresa MSG: TO no es el caso, bueno la mayor parte del tiempo, sí es verdad que en ciertas escenas en especial cuando animan fondos el movimiento se ve tosco y entre cortado, pero en general es bastante fluido, queda muy bien porque las texturas intentan emular un estilo 2D que no lo hacen chocar tanto con lo dibujado a mano, sumado al hecho de que tuvieron la cabeza de no meter cosas como los mechas en CGI junto con los humanos, lo que sacaría mucho de la inmersión si no fuese el caso. Me gustó mucho el trabajo puesto en la ilustración, ya que los fondos y los escenarios en general son muy pintorescos y detallados, me gustaron los diseños de personaje, son muy distintos al anime promedio de hoy en día ya que mantiene el estilo retro de la original con un estilo redondeado y expresivo, las expresiones y el lenguaje corporal está muy bien usados y quedan con las personalidades de los personajes. El frame rate por su parte es bastante alto y el uso de la iluminación y el color está genial, ya que usa muchos tonos de cada color para que se vea realista y para que el contraste se vea gradual en lugar de hacer un choque directo de colores ademas de saber manejarlos para que haya armonía entre ellos. Y lo mejor de todo es que este despliegue de calidad visual es constante, nunca decae a excepción de dichas escenas que había nombrado antes, quizás el diseño pueda ser un poco minimalista pero son nimiedades en un apartado muy bueno.

La banda sonora es bastante épica y memorable, o se ponen a tocar música orquestal para las escenas de combate, o se ponen música como Blues para darle un aire trágico a los eventos, aunque esto último ocurre solo en momentos muy puntuales. Toda la banda sonora está bien usada y como es extensa y variada no suenan repetitivas. La actuaciones son adecuadas con los personajes y están bien actuadas, resalto la de Char con ese tono calmado y servicial que contrasta mucho con su verdadera personalidad, es un reparto con buena performance y el lip sinc no falla.

La serie es muy buena en muchas cosas, tanto en los temas, como en el aspecto político de su mundo, pero por otra parte también tengo unas opiniones que me parecen una contra. Primero que la serie se pone medio caricaturesca con las situaciones, al punto de rozar lo irrealista y lo “que carajos estoy viendo” como esa escena en la que aparece una armadura sicario de la nada y asesina con una espada a sus objetivos, lo cual es extraño si vemos que todos tienen armas de fuego y es más fácil matarlos así. La serie también tiene sus conveniencias, la más notables, además de la chica que ve el futuro, es que Char se haya encontrado con un chico con una apariencia tan parecida a la suya, lo cual es lo único que necesito para que su plan empezara. Y otro inconveniente sería, y quizás sea un punto quisquilloso pero la serie por el final se siente algo derivativa ya que abre otro conflicto que lo conecta con otra parte, por lo que seguro dichos eventos no los verás hasta que veas la serie del 79 aún es posible que posea sus cambios notables debido a que proviene de un material distinto y habrá que leer el manga o alguna secuela, básicamente te da ganas de ver ese otro conflicto tan interesante que sacarán aunque sería una nimiedad debido a que el anime de todos modos cerró los conflictos establecidos.

Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin es fácilmente uno de los animes que más he disfrutado ver en esta década, no es el mejor, ese puesto se lo lleva Tatami Galaxy, pero sin duda se lleva el segundo lugar, es de lo más metódico y significativo posible dentro del anime, y por eso se merece una calificación muy alta, y una completa recomendación y es mirada obligatoria, incluso si no viste la original, sí, esta cosa le da mil vueltas a esa parte. Posee mucho gancho y cosas en juego, los personajes y el drama están bien ejecutados, las facciones y las ideologías están bien tratadas y es sumamente entretenido y también la puta hostia.

Story - From the moment I started seeing it, I felt as if I was watching an alternative version of Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu. The voice of the primary character Casaval is very similar to that of Yang Wenli in GED. It is such a beautiful voice that brings back so many nostalgic memories, that I stopped the anime in between to check it up (confused too as I knew that the original siyuu has ed away long back). Surprising it is the same seiyuu who voices Luffy in One Piece and its actually a she.

At the same time I was also a little disappointed to see that the hero is sort of an anti-hero. He behaves more like Reinhard from GED. He is ridiculously manipulative and cold hearted enough to kill even his own friends! His sister on the other hand is like Mother Theresa. It sometimes feels a little cheezy, but somehow its she that you are rooting for from your heart. The pain and sadness in the story, we mainly understand from her. They both are the primary characters, and their life is shown from when they are kids, to adult hood, and the galactic war.

The story starts off in a grand way - The starting of an inter galactic war. There are a gazillion characters, yet they are so distinct in their appearance and character that I was surprised that I ed them all (normally it takes me quite a few episodes to get a hang of the characters, when there are so many). 10/10 for character design and profiling.

The Gundams - Thankfully they don't make a big deal of it. Its part of the story and the attention is on the story and the characters and not on robots or visuals. This is a really grown up Gundam anime. A big Thumbs Up! Ofcourse there are tonnes of visuals and the attention to detail is fantastic. I especially loved the way in which the gigantic tanks recoiled when shooting and their inertia during start-stops. The matrix style slow motion of gundam fights are also done exceedingly well. I think this might be the best gundam anime ever made (gundam animation wise). Sometimes its even as stylistic as Gurren Lagaan (but doesn't go overboard).

Becuause the name says Gundam 'origin', I was expecting to see them start from something really small and basic and then work their way up. But the evolution was a little too fast. Like GED, they could have gone really slow, and that would have given greater satisfaction. But on he positive side, this does make it seem like a fast paced and sharply edited movie.

The Animation, Sound and Editing are all on par with the current generation of anime. Nothing more nothing less. Vehicles (and its physics), buildings, people (and their clothes), etc., reminded me of Ghost in the Shell.

Highly Recommended - You can happily watch it even if you are not a Gundam fan.
